Hello, all seekers of Holiday cheer and good tidings! We filmed this year's Holiday Concert on Wednesday, December 15th, 2021, at First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. Last year we performed mostly masked with a small team, unplugged-style. We put it online just to thank our longtime concert family for years of support. This year we were supposed to be live but with Delta raging and now Omicron, we decided to film it again, but this time with the whole team involved: Will Lee on bass, Billy Masters on guitar, Shawn Pelton on drums, Ricky Knutsen on keyboards, Joe Bonadio on percussion, and the voices of Vaneese Thomas, D-Train and Ian Cron. Add to that the CHOIR, the HORNS!!!! These are the people that have made the concert what it is. They all came to be a part of it, many from out of town.
The first annual Rob Mathes Holiday Concert took place in 1993. It was built around a series of songs I had written for various celebrations and Christmas Eve services. The story of the manger has been endlessly moving to me ever since I was a boy. Innocence and grace enter a violent world and transform it.
Eventually, many of the songs were recorded by other artists. Kathy Mattea recorded "Good News" as the title track of her Grammy Winning Christmas album and Vanessa Williams recorded Star Bright, the title track of her platinum-selling Christmas album. The 5th-anniversary concert with Vanessa, Michael McDonald, Alto Saxophonist David Sanborn, and the late great Ossie Davis was broadcast on PBS in 1998. The Boston Pops then invited me to tour with them and perform many of the songs in 2000. 18 years later, celebrating the 25th anniversary in 2018, Sting joined us for all three of that year's concerts. It's become a tradition for many, but one endangered by the pandemic. Fortunately, with the efforts of so many gifted people, including some patron saints and our producers Bob Conover and Will Sarris, this film of this year's Holiday Concert exists.
I hope it brings you a degree of joy and warmth. Every year I dedicate the Holiday Concert to a nonprofit. This year is Food Rescue US - Fairfield County. Please support Food Rescue US if you can. I know money is tight for so many of us in this precarious time.
